About Jean Byers...

As most of you know, Jean Anne Byers, CTR, member of the FTRA Executive Committee passed away on June 28, 1996. We are deeply saddened by her death. Since 1962, Jean had been in the tumor registry field, and was a founding member of FTRA.

She dedicated her life to working and helping to promote a healthier community through research and education. As an educator for our profession she instructed in many training sessions, and was co-author of the FTRA Professional Review Book. She also, volunteered with the American Cancer Society in Broward County, promoting several projects including Smoke Free Class of 2000. Her last appointment for FTRA was that of Cancer Liaison, a gubernatorial appointment to the Cancer Control Research Advisory Board (C-CRAB) as a representative for FTRA.

In 1987, Jean was president of FTRA, and her priority for the profession was visibility, credibility and improvement of the image of the registries as an important teamster in Cancer management.

Jean retired after 20 years of service at Broward General Medical Center as the Cancer Program Coordinator. Her most recent position was working with FCDS as the North Florida Field Coordinator for the Florida Cancer Data System at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami, School of Medicine.

A memorial fund was established in her name at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. For more information:
